Tree Tips

Effects of super storm Sandy on local trees

Plants in our area were severely affected by the high winds of superstorm Sandy carrying salt water inland for many miles.  White pines (pinus strobus) especially show evidence of damage.

This spring season, the best treatment for white pines is to give them time to heal. Do not encourage new growth by applying fertilizer, which will only make the trees suffer more. Fertilizers, made up of the same compound found in salt water - sodium - will further stress the trees.  The fall shedding period and next year’s spring will tell whether the pinus strobus will survive.
